Swearing: Between Jokes and Pain

Swearing: Between Jokes and Pain

The uses of swearing are wide-ranging, from verbal abuse and jokes to expressions of love. Verbal aggression in schools is a central theme in Oksana Havrileva’s study of the world of swearing,

where she examines its causes and forms, as well as preventative measures and the cultural differences that shape our perception of it.

She also shows how swearing use varies across cultures: in Slavic languages, for example, sexually suggestive language is prevalent, while in German-speaking regions, particularly vulgar swearing is widespread.

An analysis of verbal aggression during the COVID-19 pandemic reveals additional aspects, such as the emergence of new swear words and instances of conflict.

A specialized introduction to swearing theory – its functions, forms, and effects.
