Sarah Valentine , Ph.D., is a prolific writer and translator. In 2013, she was awarded a Lannan Book Foundation Fellowship, teaching literature and creative writing at Princeton, California in Los Angeles, California in Riverside, and Northwestern universities. In her memoir “ When I Was White,” Valentine recounts growing up in Pittsburgh as an African-American woman of mixed race, who belonged to a white family that kept her identity secret. She currently resides in Pittsburgh.
