Early Life and Education
Born on October 20, 1964, in Oakland, California, Kamala Devi Harris is the daughter of immigrants—her mother, a breast cancer researcher from India, and her father, an economics professor from Jamaica. She graduated from Howard University in 1986 and earned her law degree from the University of California, Hastings College of the Law in 1989.
Career Milestones
Prosecutor and Attorney General: Harris began her career in the Alameda County District Attorney's Office. She later served as the District Attorney of San Francisco (2004–2011) and as the Attorney General of California (2011–2017), becoming the first woman and the first person of color to hold these positions in the state.
