In the age of globalization, and the dominance of the internet and social media, borders are sometimes portrayed as relics of the past that should be consigned to history. At other times, they appear more imposing than ever before. These two perceptions coexist, albeit with varying intensity: sometimes their features seem outdated, and at other times they shine with unprecedented grandeur. The spirit of the age has become paradoxical, blowing in two completely opposite directions with regard to territorial borders, which are both praised and fiercely criticized, reflecting two equally paralyzing forms of paralysis.
