A Brief Introduction to Modern Iranian History

A Brief Introduction to Modern Iranian History

This book, “A Brief Introduction to Modern Iranian History,” offers a vivid overview of Iranian history from the late 19th century to the present day. The author paints a complex yet accessible picture of modern Iranian history, where various modernization processes, popular protest movements, and the country’s strained relationship with the great powers have shaped social development. The book covers, among other things, the Constitutional Revolution at the turn of the 20th century, the discovery of oil, the rise of the Pahlavi monarchy, and the crisis that ensued from the nationalization of Iran’s oil industry. It also provides an in-depth account of the events leading up to the 1979 revolution and the establishment of the Islamic Republic. The revolution had far-reaching consequences, not only for Iran but for the entire Muslim world. These events, taken together, provide important historical context for understanding current events in Iran, particularly the so-called “Women, Life, and Freedom” protests that erupted in 2022. These protests represent a deep dissatisfaction with the Iranian regime, which, despite popular protests and external pressure, has demonstrated remarkable resilience.
