The Crusades were the largest military campaign in the history of Western Europe. They began nearly a thousand years ago and lasted for over five hundred years. The Crusades united Europeans around the idea of a necessary and just war, an idea that persists to this day.
This book offers an insightful and informative look at the history of this movement, which began with the conquest of Jerusalem. In the centuries that followed, European princes waged a long series of wars in the Middle East, as well as in the Iberian Peninsula and the Baltic region.
These campaigns, purportedly religious in nature, reinforced the stereotypical image of Islam as heresy and violence, but they also led to the first scholarly studies of Islam as a religion in Europe.
This book is the first comprehensive study from Scandinavia of all the medieval Crusades.
