Few things are more romanticized than romantic love…
Love—celebrated passionately in songs for centuries, lauded in literature, and glorified in film, even in its most toxic forms. Despite its fickleness and relatively short lifespan, romantic love has become a central model of social organization. From a young age, it is constantly instilled in us as an indispensable element of happiness and contentment.
Yet, its reality is far from romantic—especially for women.
Romantic relationships between men and women create the framework that allows them to perform two-thirds of unpaid work, earn less, and slip into dependency. In contrast, unmarried, childless women are the happiest and healthiest segment of society. They have a longer life expectancy than married women, while married men live longer than unmarried men. Romantic relationships with men are harmful to women: their health, their emotions, and their finances.
In this brilliant piece, Beatrice Frassell addresses these injustices and calls for a shift in thinking. Because: romantic love is a patriarchal indoctrination campaign that has dominated the narrative for centuries. Thank goodness we don’t need it, and that we are capable of defining love for ourselves.
