In the summer of 2024, the red triangle, an Islamic symbol of resistance used by Hamas to distinguish its adversaries, suddenly appeared in several European cities.
This event prompted an investigative research trip by Anna Boursian. The extremism expert analyzed clandestine chat groups, monitored demonstrations and conferences, and worked through the archives of left-wing and pro-Palestinian movements. Her analysis focused on transnational networks like Alternative Path and Samdon, which, under the banner of “resistance,” promote a political discourse that portrays armed Islamist groups such as Hamas, Islamic Jihad, and Hezbollah as legitimate actors in a global struggle against imperialism—a discourse that has also spread within authoritarian left-wing groups since October 7, 2023.
Why do such alliances form? What anti-fascist principles are abandoned in the process? And what are the political consequences when the fight against injustice becomes a justification for antisemitism and violence?
