This book is an ambitious historical account of the main ideas of social democracy in six Anglophone countries: Australia, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, and the United States. It traces the evolution of social democratic thinking in these countries leading towards the conclusion that fraternity is the key concept underlying the ideology of social democracy in the English-speaking world. McGrane finds that "post-third way" social democrats in the time period from 2005 to 2025 have shifted back to the left and towards a greater emphasis on fraternity following the end of third way social democratic governments such as Tony Blair's New Labour government. In comparing English-speaking social democracy's past to its present, this book offers valuable insights for scholars, politicians, and activists struggling to define the meaning of social democracy in the 21st century.
