Democracy in America
الديمقراطية في أمريكا
This work was the first to analyze the origins of modern democracy, the tension between liberty and equality, and the impact of American society on shaping the modern world. It is an indispensable classic for understanding some of today's challenges.
In 1831, Alexis de Tocqueville (1805–1859) traveled across the United States to study the American prison system. His discovery of the democratic system inspired one of the most important works of political theory and historical interpretation of the modern era. "Democracy in America" became an immediate classic thanks to its unique blend of insightful and bold observations and profound insights, through which the author grasped the major trends that would shape future bourgeois society. While it was clear to Tocqueville that humanity was rapidly advancing toward a democratic age, he nevertheless pointed out its weaknesses and potential dangers. This seminal work of political, philosophical, and historical thought, which has enjoyed great success in Europe and America since its publication, has left its mark thanks to its influential visionary nature and remains essential reading for understanding the present.
