The book Social Frameworks of Memory is the foundational text for the sociological approach to the study of memory. This work deals with our relationship with time and history, in which Maurice Halbwachs, in dialogue with the philosopher Henri Bergson, proposes the radical thesis that memory processes - usually attributed to purely individual mental faculties - are in fact socially determined. This volume has inaugurated a line of research that will work on the concept of collective memory, recognizing it as fundamental in determining the conditions of possibility for identity processes of social groups.
Today the book returns to libraries in a revised edition enriched with some key texts for its understanding – such as the reviews written by the historian Marc Bloch and the psychologist Charles Blundell immediately after the publication of its first edition in 1925 – making this classic work of sociology of exceptional interest available to the Italian public.
