In this theoretical masterpiece, Andreas Reckwitz examines the causes, structure and consequences of our “society of singularities”: from the transformation of industrial capitalism into cultural capitalism, through the rise of digital technologies and the “culture machine,” to the emergence of a new educated urban middle class. According to the German sociologist, in late modernity, the logic of the general, which was prevalent in industrial society, was replaced by the logic of uniqueness, which prizes the exceptional over the ordinary. However, this “society of singularities” systematically produces devaluation and inequality: monopolistic markets, labor market polarization, rural depopulation, and the alienation of the traditional middle class. Moreover, the rise of populism and the rise of aggressive forms of nationalism that emphasize the cultural authenticity of peoples are merely the flip side of society's uniqueness.Translated into Italian for the first time, this volume offers a new perspective on the changes that have occurred in societies in recent decades, making it a valuable tool for understanding the forces shaping today's world.
