The most powerful woman in American political history tells the story of her transformation from housewife to Speaker of the House of Representatives, how she became a brilliant legislator, a key partner to presidents, and the most prominent leader of the resistance to Trump.

At age 46, Nancy Pelosi, a mother of five, asked her youngest daughter if she should run for Congress. Alexandra Pelosi replied: “Mom, live your life!” So Nancy did, and what a life she had!In her book, "The Art of Power," Pelosi describes for the first time what it will take to make history not only as the first woman to hold the nation's highest legislative office, but also to pass laws that have saved lives and livelihoods, from the 2008 emergency economic rescue to advancing health care. Pelosi describes the perseverance, conviction, and respect she showed toward her members to succeed, as well as her joy in seeing America and the world change for the better.Pelosi was among the best-prepared and most diligent House Speakers in history, scrambling to find common ground, or hold her ground, with presidents from Bush to Biden.

Pelosi took positions that established her as a voice of wisdom on the major moral issues of the day, warning early of the dangers of the Iraq War and the Chinese government's long record of misconduct. This moral courage prepared her for the arrival of Trump, with whom she had a famous confrontation, becoming a symbol of resistance against his turbulent presidency.Pelosi tells us her personal story of January 6, and her tireless efforts to call the National Guard to the Capitol. Nearly two years later, violence and anger erupted inside Pelosi's home when someone broke into her home, demanded an audience with the Speaker, and brutally attacked her beloved husband, Paul. Here, Pelosi shares the details of that horrific day and the painful psychological effects it left on her and her family.Pelosi tells us her personal story of January 6, and her tireless efforts to call the National Guard to the Capitol. About Nancy Pelosi

Nancy Pelosi was elected the 52nd Speaker of the House in 2007—and served as the first woman Speaker for eight years, off and on until 2023. She came to Congress in 1987 for the children and to fight HIV/AIDS. Under Pelosi’s leadership, Congress enacted transformative legislation, most notably the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act. A defender of democracy, she directed House efforts to investigate the January 6th insurrection and has spoken out forcefully for human rights globally. Pelosi continues to represent San Francisco in the House, a privilege she has treasured for thirty-seven years. Pelosi and her husband, Paul, have five children and ten grandchildren. They live in San Francisco, which they consider heaven on earth.
