In this light and fun work, which is a follow-up to their wonderful 2020 collaboration entitled “A Fortune of Pigeons”*, Martin and Bliss offer an illustrated look at the former’s career, the latter’s musings, and their shared source of inspiration, Bliss’s dog, Penny. The narration is concise and attractive. Through his cartoon character, Martin narrates his journey from stand-up comedy to an illustrious film career, reminiscing with anyone who will listen, whether they are passers-by or Bliss and Benny. adds Penny, a chorus dogGreek, comments and clarifications (although not always on films). Martin reflects on the success of his first full-length feature, The Fool, and his four-film partnership with Carl Reiner that produced the masterpiece, All Yours, which, along with Martin's adaptation of Cyrano de Bergerac, Roxanne, is among his most daring and adventurous works. Martin is humorous and humble throughout the book, although he sees fit to give credit to the two films, "Cheaper by the Dozen," which were well received. They received poor critical acclaim, but were popular successes. If he thought, due to his years of performing in front of the public, that he would easily transition to film acting, his first film dispelled this belief. Regarding his discomfort in watching his performance, he says: “If you think I am too sensitive, try watching a two-hour movie for yourself up close, and you will not be affected.” Martin recalls his meetings and acting participations with an elite group of famous artists, and hints sarcastically at the reason for the stagnation of his film career: “I lost interest.”"At the same time that movies were losing interest in me." Bliss gets to improvise in "And Other Pastimes," a collection of New Yorker-style cartoons that are typically clever but unconnected with the rest of the text.
