The World of Childhood… Between Joy and Meaning
Since its founding in 1999, the French publishing house Grrr…Art has carved out a distinctive path in the world of children’s literature and illustrated books through a unique blend of humor, humanistic values, and stories inspired by children’s everyday lives.
The house was founded by the brothers Georges and André Grard, whose project has become one of the notable models for publishing books that combine educational value with enjoyment and creativity. Grrr…Art is a publishing house that places the child at the heart of creativity, turning the book into a tool for both smiles and reflection.
An Unconventional Beginning
The idea for Grrr…Art emerged from a simple yet powerful moment: a question asked by one of Georges Grard’s students:
“What can we do to fight unemployment?”
From an attempt to answer this question in a playful way—by imagining strange and unusual professions for each child—the seed of the first storytelling project was born.
The visit of the well-known illustrator Pef to the classroom, his interest in the idea, and his encouragement to publish it led to the house’s very first book:
Alphabet des inventions farfelues (“Alphabet of Wacky Inventions”) — a work combining imagination, humor, and educational value.
Les Formidables — a book for children aged 1 to 5, designed for shared reading between parents and young children.
Les Fables Bulleuses — a collection of 35 stories and poetic texts for children over the age of 9.
Les Hommes de Lettre — a book-game introducing 40 world-famous writers through visual and linguistic clues.
Le Kornimon cherche travail — an illustrated story about job hunting, produced through a writing workshop led by teachers from the Vosges region.
Joy with a Message
The publishing house focuses primarily on two main children’s collections:
1. The “Enfant-Phare” Collection
Aimed at children aged 3 to 12, it addresses everyday themes with humor and creativity, such as:
Football
Princesses
Life inside a trash can
Difference and emotions on a pink planet
2. The “Enfant-Tome” Collection
This includes widely popular illustrated works, such as:
Léo et Lulu — a humorous series about sibling relationships (3 volumes so far)
Touba — an illustrated story starring a mischievous orangutan
To date, the publisher’s children’s catalogue includes 14 books that combine:
Light, accessible language
Humor
Situations drawn from children’s everyday experiences
Publications for Adults as Well
Grrr…Art’s work is not limited to children alone. The house also offers two collections for adults featuring playful or satirical literary works, reflecting its vision of creating content that parents and children can enjoy together.
Conclusion
Grrr…Art stands out for its ability to transform the world of childhood into a space where laughter, learning, and imagination come together.
Through its educational and artistic vision, it has succeeded in building an alternative model to traditional publishing, rooted in direct communication with children and in stories that reflect their world in a realistic yet playful way.
