Ullstein Buchverlage

Founded in Berlin in 1877 by Leopold Ullstein, Ullstein Buchverlage is a cornerstone of German publishing history. By the 1920s, it had grown into Europe’s largest publishing empire.

Despite facing “Aryanization” and forced sale during the Nazi regime, the company was restituted to the Ullstein family after WWII and later became part of major publishing groups, currently operating under the Swedish Bonnier Group.

Editorial Philosophy and Content:

The house is defined by its commitment to liberalism, tolerance, and cosmopolitanism. Its portfolio is vast, covering everything from high-end literary fiction and commercial bestsellers to serious non-fiction and academic history. It manages several renowned imprints, including:
Propyläen: Specializing in history, politics, and art.
List and Allegria: Focusing on lifestyle, spiritual, and popular non-fiction.
Ullstein Five: Dedicated to socially relevant contemporary German stories.

Global Impact:

Ullstein is a major player in the international rights market, with its titles translated into over 40 languages. It has been the home to world-famous authors like Erich Maria Remarque and continues to publish modern international bestsellers, such as Giulia Enders’ Gut.
