American Philosophical Society, the oldest scientific society in the United States The American Philosophical Society was founded in 1743 by Benjamin Franklin with the goal of "disseminating useful knowledge." In the twenty-first century, we continue this mission in three key ways: First, we honor and engage leading scholars, researchers, and professionals through elected membership and opportunities for interdisciplinary intellectual fellowship, particularly at our biannual meetings. Second, we support research and discovery through grants, fellowships, lectures, and publicationsAwards, exhibitions and public awareness. Third, we serve researchers with a research library of manuscripts and other collections that are internationally recognized for their enduring historical value. The current activities of the American Philosophical Society reflect its founder's spirit of inquiry and inquiry, provide a platform for the free exchange of ideas, and affirm our conviction that intellectual inquiry and critical thinking are in the public interest.
