The Modern Library

The Modern Library was founded in 1917 by publishers Bonney and Liveright to provide American readers with inexpensive editions of the works of European modernists, as well as the works of a few American contemporary writers. In 1925, Horace Liveright sold the Modern Library to one of his employees, Bennett Cerf, a twenty-seven-year-old vice president who wanted to start his own business and who later founded Random House Publishing. The modern library still displays precious classical masterpieces, volumes of essential writings, major translations of great works from around the world, and rediscoveries of great literary and historical value.Today, the Modern Library seeks to honor writers whose works have made a qualitative shift and challenged the status quo. We hope to remind readers that today's masterpieces are often the works of yesterday's pioneers; What we call literary heritage is a constantly renewed collection of great books, books that gain their importance from readers’ interaction with their topics over the centuries.
