Universal-Publishers was founded in 1997 by Jeffrey R. Young, and it is an American publishing house headquartered in Irvine, California. The company originally began its journey as a pioneering digital platform named Dissertation.com, becoming one of the first companies to adopt print-on-demand technologies and PDF eBooks to facilitate the publication of academic dissertations and doctoral theses, making them available to researchers at affordable prices.

The publishing house later expanded to include three main imprints covering different fields. While the Dissertation.com imprint continues to focus on university theses, the BrownWalker Press imprint was launched in 2001 to publish textbooks, research monographs, and open-access journals. Meanwhile, the primary Universal-Publishers imprint is dedicated to general non-fiction books, as well as technical and educational manuals.

The company is distinguished by its focus on specialized content directed at an academic audience, and it possesses a strong global distribution network in cooperation with major institutions like the Ingram Content Group, enabling it to print and distribute its titles in the United States, the United Kingdom, Australia, and beyond. Additionally, the publisher adopts a flexible business model that allows authors to retain their copyrights while receiving competitive royalty percentages from retail sales.
