Harbour Publishing is an award-winning independent book publisher owned and operated by Howard and Mary White.

The company was established in 1974 and is based on British Columbia’s Sunshine Coast. Harbour Publishing is well known for the Raincoast Chronicles, a series of anthologies on BC coast history and culture, of which twenty have now been produced. Harbour is also the publisher of over five hundred titles, including the bestselling Fishing with John by Edith Iglauer; The Fly in Autumn by David Zieroth, which won the 2009 Governor General’s Award for Poetry; and many other prize-winning books such as The Encyclopedia of British Columbia, Marine Life of the Pacific Northwest: A Photographic Encyclopedia of Invertebrates, Seaweeds and Selected Fishes by Andy Lamb and Bernard P. Hanby and The Encyclopedia of Raincoast Place Names: A Complete Reference to Coastal British Columbia by Andrew Scott.

Other well-known Harbour authors are Arthur Black, beloved humorist and author of A Chip off the Old Black; Anne Cameron, author of some 30 titles including the classic Daughters of Copper Woman; historian Jean Barman, author of British Columbia: Spirit of the People; journalist Stephen Hume, author of A Walk with the Rainy Sisters; Patrick Lane, author of Witness; and Mike McCardell, whose humour collections including The Expanded Reilly Method and Everything Works have raised over $70,000 for the Variety Club of BC Children’s Fund.

The Canadian Historical Association has cited publisher Howard White as “a tireless promoter and creator of quality British Columbia regional history,” recognizing that Harbour Publishing “has nurtured and brought into being a remarkable range of works that capture the essence of British Columbia.”

White is also an award-winning writer of fiction, non-fiction, poetry, articles and essays. His book Writing in the Rain won the Stephen Leacock Medal for Humour, and he has also been awarded a Canadian Media Club Prize, the Eaton’s BC Book Award, the Canadian Historical Society Career Award and the Roderick Haig-Brown Regional Prize, among others. He is a member of the Order of British Columbia and in 2003 received an honorary Doctorate of Laws from the University of Victoria.

Harbour Publishing acknowledges financial support from the Government of Canada through the Canada Book Fund and the Canada Council for the Arts, and from the Province of British Columbia through the BC Arts Council and the Book Publishing Tax Credit, for its publishing activities.
