About Us
Fremantle Press is a proudly not-for-profit team of publishers, authors and artists who bring uniquely Australian stories to the world. Established in 1976, Fremantle Press is renowned for producing quality works of fiction, non-fiction, poetry and children’s literature. Our core purpose is to identify talented new and emerging Western Australian writers and artists, and to publish and distribute their work to the widest possible audience.
Tonya McCusker
Tonya McCusker danced around the world with the Australian Ballet Company before returning to the University of Western Australia to complete a law degree. She spent several years living, working and travelling in Hong Kong and China but her passion for youth development saw her return to WA as business development manager of the Leeuwin Youth Development Foundation. Mrs McCusker is currently a trustee and the administrator of the McCusker Charitable Foundation and works closely with more than 100 community and charitable organisations. She is an advisory board member of the McCusker Centre for Action on Alcohol and Youth, an advisory board member of Giving West – an organisation set up to promote more effective giving in Western Australia, and patron of many other organisations. She is married to former governor of Western Australia Malcolm McCusker and has three children.
Ian Lilburne
Ian Lilburne has worked in the arts industry in Western Australia for the past 30 years. The original director of the Artrage Festival (now Fringe World), he is now a freelance event producer/project manager/artistic director running his own production company, Aeon Songs. An articulate and meticulous producer with strong financial, marketing, communication, public relations and organisational skills, Ian joined the board of Fremantle Press in 2013 and became chair in 2014
Felicity Ruse
Felicity Ruse arrived from the UK in 1976 with a background in real estate. Over the past 30 years, she has run two successful business enterprises. Felicity joined the board of Fremantle Press in 2013 and brings a wealth of day-to-day small business decision-making experience.
Bill Chambers
Bill Chambers is a Chartered Accountant who operates his own accounting practice. He has had considerable experience with not-for-profit organisations including board roles at Trinity – a Uniting Church residential college at the University of Western Australia – and Men of the Trees Inc.
Chris Lewis
Chris Lewis spent the last 15 years as a strategic corporate consultant and short-term CEO of mid-size service companies. Before that he had a long and distinguished career as a journalist, a magazine editor in Asia and as a partner in leading public relations and advertising businesses. He brings his extensive experience on not-for-profit boards to the Fremantle Press table.
Annie Fogarty
Annie Fogarty is co-founder and executive chairperson of the Fogarty Foundation, a not-for-profit organisation providing education programs in Western Australia. She is involved in a number of boards and committees including the Board of Roseworth Primary School, the Advisory Groups for the Centre for Social Impact, and the ECU Fogarty Learning Centre. Annie was appointed an inaugural ambassador for children and young people and was made a Member of the Order of Australia in 2013 for her work in the advancement of education in Western Australia. She has received an Honorary Doctorate of Letters from the University of Western Australia and an Honorary Doctorate of Education from Edith Cowan University.
Colin Campbell-Fraser
Colin Campbell-Fraser is a graduate of the University of Western Australia, with extensive knowledge and experience as a professional in communications and marketing in both the private and the public sectors. A former senior newspaper journalist he spent eight years with the WA State Government as media and policy adviser to various ministers and premiers. Following three years with ABC Radio as a producer of morning current affairs, he joined UWA in 1996 as director of public affairs, and in 2008 was appointed principal adviser external relations and advocacy to UWA’s vice-chancellor and senior executive. He now consults as an adviser and mentor to organisations, institutions and individuals
Greg Dobson
Greg Dobson has worked in professional services for over 15 years. He is a partner of Ernst & Young, specialising in government and infrastructure projects and transactions, and has worked in London, Sydney and Perth. Greg brings a strong commercial acumen and a background in business strategy and financial advice.
Clair Medhurst
Clair immigrated to WA in 1985 after completing a law degree at Kings College, London. She finished her legal training and practised from 1986 as a commercial lawyer working in the resources, corporate and construction sectors for major law firms, in corporate roles and as a sole practitioner and consultant until 2009. Clair has been a non-executive director on the boards of ASX listed and unlisted public companies and not-for-profit organisations for over 25 years. Her experience on not-for-profit boards includes 10 years with West Australian Ballet Company Inc. and six years as a board member and treasurer of EON Foundation Inc. Clair brings experience in legal and commercial risk management, governance, strategic planning, project management and fundraising to the board of Fremantle Press.
Jane Fraser
Jane Fraser has worked in trade and education publishing for over 20 years. Following five years in San Francisco with an international co-editions publishing company she moved back to her hometown of Sydney, then to Perth where she worked in corporate marketing and communications. She joined Fremantle Press in 2008 as non-fiction publisher and has been CEO since 2010 with a portfolio that includes sales and custom publishing.
Georgia Richter
Georgia Richter has a BA (Hons) from the University of Melbourne and an MA (Creative Writing) from the University of Western Australia. She has taught creative writing, professional writing and editing at the universities of Melbourne, Western Australia and Curtin. She has been with Fremantle Press since 2008. Georgia is fiction, creative non-fiction and poetry publisher, and an IPEd Accredited Editor.
Cate Sutherland
Cate Sutherland originally trained and worked as a solicitor before moving into publishing at University of Western Australia Press. In 1997 she coordinated the Perth Writers Festival. She then took up a position as production and publishing coordinator at Fremantle Press. In 2006 she was appointed publisher of children’s and young adult books.
Claire Miller
Claire Miller worked for Lothian Press in Melbourne before relocating to the Netherlands to work for the country’s first satellite communications company during the ISP boom. Upon her return to Australia, Claire worked for a number of years as an events manager and marketer for Tourism WA and the University of Western Australia. She joined Fremantle Press in 2008 and is the marketing and communications manager.
Wendy Jenkins
Wendy Jenkins has been an editor with Fremantle Press for several decades (poetry, fiction, non-fiction) and now works principally as an assessment editor. Books she has edited have won major national and international awards including the Miles Franklin and the Commonwealth Poetry Prize. She is author of two poetry collections and four novels for younger readers and is a past member of the Literature Board of the Australia Council.
Naama Grey-Smith
Naama Grey-Smith joined Fremantle Press in 2010, and in 2015 was appointed senior editor. She has edited award-winning fiction and non-fiction and writes for Australian Book Review. She speaks three languages, has degrees in communications and publishing, and is completing a PhD in creative writing at Curtin University.
Cathy Szabo
Cathy Szabo worked as a library technician at the State Library of Western Australia before taking a 17-year break to raise her two daughters. Cathy has been the customer service manager at Fremantle Press since 2005.
Patricia Brady
Patricia Brady’s first position in administration was in the admissions office of the University of Western Australia. She worked as a bookkeeper for one of Perth’s major building companies and was trained on one of the first computerised accounting systems in Western Australia. For the last 11 years she has worked across multiple companies for the one director. She joined Fremantle Press as the accounts manager in 2015.
