About us
Wakefield Press has had five incarnations, and is a leading independent publishing company based in Adelaide, South Australia. The current version, which turned 25 in 2014, is a commercial publishing company that releases around 50 titles each year on a diverse range of topics including literary and popular fiction, history, biography, art, poetry, food, wine, the environment, education and true life (ordinary people in extraordinary situations). Wakefield Press’s quality backlist is currently around 500, and our ebook list continues to grow rapidly.
Wakefield Press regularly wins literary, design and production awards. Some of our most recent coups include: Great Central State by Jack Cross winning the Chief Minister’s Northern Territory History Book Award 2012, Time’s Long Ruin by Stephen Orr scooping the South Australian Award for the National Year of Reading, Bold Palates by Barbara Santich being touted ‘Best Culinary History Book’ for Australia in the Gourmand World Cookbook Awards 2012, Wine, Terroir and Climate Change by John Gladstones being inducted into the Gourmand Wine Books Hall of Fame in 2011, and Flip Shelton’s Veg In winning Best in Australia in the Gourmand World Cookbook Awards 2011. The Blue Ribbon Cookbook, Behind the Veil, Your Brick Oven and One Magic Square have also achieved best-seller status in the Australian market.
We maintain a relationship with several international publishers and have recently sold the German and British rights for Divine Vegan Desserts by Lisa Fabry, Chinese rights for Europe @ 2.4 km/h, Polish and Hungarian rights for Amore and Amaretti and South African rights for One Magic Square, to name a few.
We also provide commissioned publishing for organisations, and have ongoing publishing relationships with organisations such as Carrick Hill, SALA festival, University of Adelaide and University of South Australia.
We distribute our own titles, as well as those of a small selection of overseas and local publishers, to book shops; and sell direct to the public via our bookshop located at 16 Rose Street, Mile End, in South Australia.
