ABOUT US

Black & White Publishing was founded in 1999 by Managing Director Campbell Brown and Publishing Director Alison McBride. Since then, the business has grown into one of Scotland’s leading independent publishers with over 300 books in print across a variety of genres. Committed to publishing the best books from the most talented writers in the UK and beyond, some of our bestselling authors include Daniela Sacerdoti,  James Robertson, Estelle Maskame,  Nick Alexander,  Richard Gordon,  Alex Norton,  Millie Gray,  Sally Magnusson and Tony Black. We produce an extensive range of titles, including general non-fiction,  biography,  sport and humour,  as well as selected fiction,  young adult and children’s books.

This year, we’ve started an exciting new alliance with PGUK who now provide sales representation for our titles, and GBS continue to distribute our books. Our eBooks are distributed by Faber Factory. Over recent years, our range of fiction has grown following recent eBook successes such as Daniela Sacerdoti’s Glen Avich series, which has sold nearly a million copies to date. These new alliances and our e-book successes are helping us shape and develop the list in new ways to bring more exciting new titles to both local and global markets.

OUR IMPRINTS

ITCHY COO

Itchy Coo is our award-winning Scots language imprint for children. Producing timeless children’s books written in Scots for all ages, which have included original works such as the Katy series of books and Animal ABC, as well as translations of bestselling favourite children’s authors including Julia Donaldson (The Gruffalo,  Room on the Broom,  Whit the Clockleddy Heard ) and David Walliams (Mr Mingin,  Billionaire Bairn ).

Several of our Itchy Coo titles have also won awards. In 2003 Animal ABC won the Times Educational Supplement Scotland/Saltire Society Prize for Educational Publications; in 2004 King o the Midden was shortlisted for the Scottish Arts Council Book Awards; and in 2007 Katie’s Moose won the Early Years category of the Royal Mail Scottish Children’s Book Awards. Other milestones in the company’s history include Precious and the Puggies by Alexander McCall Smith,  which was published in Scots first; Kidnappit, the first Scots language graphic novel; and The Braille Coo, the first ever Braille book in Scots.

BROONS BOOKS (INCORPORATING OOR WULLIE)

In 2014 we embarked on a new relationship with D.C. Thomson, dealing with the book publishing output surrounding the Broons and Oor Wullie brands. In addition to a range of calendars and diaries, we have also introduced a variety of new titles to the range including Bake with Maw Broon,  Knit Your Own Broons and Oor Wullie’s Big Bucket of Laughs Joke Book.  As part of this relationship, we have also taken on the titles formerly published by Waverley Books including the bestselling Maw Broon’s Cookbook, and look forward to expanding the list of titles in the years to come. As part of this relationship we also produce calendars for The Scots Magazine  and The People’s Friend  magazine.
