Between the Lines is a publishing house affiliated with a social movement founded in 1977.
We publish nonfiction books that expose and challenge injustice in our society. We aim to highlight the struggles of Black, Indigenous, and racially marginalized communities; and immigrants; and women; And the working class. BTL Publishing is proud to be affiliated with the left, and the books we publish reflect our activist roots and commitment to social justice struggles. BTL authors are academics, journalists, artists and activists – and all of our authors hope their books will bring about political changeAnd socially.
As a product of New Left radical thought, BTL embodies the cooperative and democratic ideals of its founders. BTL has no president and no individual owner; Rather, it is run by a small staff and a dedicated, volunteer editorial committee. Decisions about what we publish are made by consensus. We publish books not for profit, but to document and support struggles for a better world, challenge the mainstream, and offer readers new perspectives on crucial political issues.Our print shop is located on Takaronto, a traditional land of the Wendat, Anishinaabe and Haudenosaunee peoples, subject to the One-Spoon Plate Treaty. This land was sponsored by the Mississauga people of the Credit River and is home to many indigenous peoples, including the Métis, displaced from their homelands by Canadian extractive and other industries. We all share a responsibility to care for and preserve these lands, and to fight for a better future for the Earth and all people.
