In the novel, a young man, leaves his family for a contemplative life, then, restless, discards it for one of the flesh.
He conceives a son, but bored and sickened by lust and greed, moves on again.
Near despair, comes to a river where he hears a unique sound.
This sound signals the true beginning of his life — the beginning of suffering, rejection, peace, and, finally, wisdom.
The word is made up of two words in Sanskrit language, siddha (achieved) + artha (what was searched for), which together means “he who has found meaning (of existence)” or “he who has attained his goals”.
In fact, the Buddha’s own name, before his renunciation, was Siddhartha Gautama, Prince of Kapilavastu. In this book, the Buddha is referred to as “Gotama”.
