The Kremayr & Scheriau publishing house was founded in 1951 by Rudolf Kremayr and Wilhelm Scheriau. In the early years, he was the most important licensing publisher for the then still young book community Donauland. Already the first title of the house, “Eva Faschaunerin” by Maria Steurer, became the bestseller, which still many should follow. Kremayr & Scheriau quickly developed into one of the leading publishers in Austria.
In 1966 Bertelsmann took part in the book community Donauland and subsequently also at the publishing house Kremayr & Scheriau.
The greatest successes in the years of belonging to the Bertelsmann Group were the Hugo Portisch “I saw …” books and his “opus magnum” “Österreich I” and “Österreich II”. But also the memoirs of Bruno Kreisky, the “Austrian Century” by Hellmut Andics or the best sellers of Hans Bankl, among others “The pathologist know everything, but too late …” are the most important bestseller of this time, as well as the six-volume “Wien-Lexikon” by Felix Czeike, which is a standard reference book about Vienna.
In 1991 the Orac publishing house publisher was taken over. Founded in 1975 by Norbert Orac, Orac mainly moved books on the subject of sport – Heinz Prüller’s Grand Prix stories, the biographies of Jochen Rindt and Niki Lauda. Soon, however, critical specialist books and books on the areas of health and advice were included in the program. With the health bestsellers of Dr. med. Ulf Böhmig or psychology counselors like “fairy tales, which help the children” by Gerlinde Ortner Kremayr & Scheriau got a strong second standby the purchase of Orac.
Prof. Leo Mazakarini , former Orac program leader , subsequently oversaw both programs until he retired in 2000.
The greatest bestseller of this era was undoubtedly the first cookbook by Ewald Plachutta and Christoph Wagner “Die gute Küche”, from which up to today more than 400,000 copies have been sold. In the political arena, Hans Henning Scharsach’s “Haider Kampf” was on the Austrian bestseller lists for weeks.
In 2002 Martin Scheriau , the son of the publisher co-founder, took over the shares of Bertelsmann and has since then been the sole owner. Leo Mazakarini came back as a publisher and designed the program of the two publishers until 2006.
Since 2006, Barbara Köszegi has been the program leader . She has consistently pursued the program priorities – politics, culture and events at K & S, health, psychology and cookery books at Orac. Our top authors include Karim El-Gawhary, Niki Glattauer, Paul Lendvai, Eugene’s friend, Dolores Schmidinger, Roland and Sabine Bösel and many more.
In autumn 2015 , we launched a new literary program focusing on the diverse and new voices of Austrian contemporary authors, the game of language and unusual visions of the world. The authors of the literature program include Marianne Jungmaier, Irmgard Fuchs, Daniel Zipfel, Gertraud Klemm and Ianina Ilitcheva.
Above all, we are a publishing house. With many of our authors, we have long-standing relationships and friendships, and perhaps this is the right opportunity to thank them all for their well-being and well-being. And we would like to thank them for publishing their great books.
