The Third Brother: A story of family, and war
Researching your family’s history can quickly become an obsession.
Penny Matthews knew almost nothing about her uncle’s older brother, Glen Murrie, except that he had died in the Second World War.
An RAAF bomber pilot, he was killed on operations in the Pacific. Seventy years after his death he was just a name to her: a photograph, a poignantly brief entry on the family tree.
Asking questions, scouring service archives, trawling through Trove, Penny began to discover more about Glen.
At the heart of these discoveries was the story of his love for the girl who was to have been his wife. For Glen’s short life touched many lives, and his death cast a shadow that is still felt today.
Penny Matthews has written more than thirty books for children, as well as books on subjects as diverse as Australian colonial cookery and the novels of Thomas Hardy.
Country life has often featured in her work, most notably in A Year on Our Farm, the Children’s Book Council of Australia’s 2003 Book of the Year: Early Childhood. Her young adult novel A Girl Like Me, based on her research into the murder of a teenage girl in rural South Australia in 1902, won the 2011 Davitt Award for Children’s and Young Adult Literature.
